Tyvek envelopes for storage

Dear colleagues:

Jill Schneider, head of the USGS Alaska field records collection (Technical
Data
Unit) in Anchorage, and member of this list, is unable to use email or the
Internet because of restrictions related to the DOI Indian Trust Management
situation. I'm posting this question for her; please reply to the list,
and I'll fax your replies to her.

Does/has anyone out there used Tyvek envelopes for storage of field
notebooks or
similar materials? Is it cost-efficient and preservation-efficient?
The Alaska field records collection currently has about 4000 notebooks,
ranging in
size from 6-1/2/ x 9-1/2 to 8-1/2 x 11 inches. Materials would date from
the late 1800's to the pretty recent times. The annual accrual rate of
material cannot be predicted. Things can dribble in, and then large
quantities arrive when someone dies or retires (same thing happens to me
here in Denver).
Many of the materials are heavily used. They are stored on compact
shelving, and are currently in archival mylar or paper envelopes.
Jill is wondering if the Tyvek envelopes would offer better archival
protection and
would be worth the extra cost, as compared to the cost of archival paper
envelopes.

Thanks very much.
