Title:          Assistant Archivist
                Full-time, 35 hours per week/full benefits

Salary:         $35,000

Department: UFT Archives & Records Center

Job Duties:

                The United Federation of Teachers, Local 2, AFT, AFL-CIO, the
largest teachers union local in the U.S., seeks an energetic, flexible and
creative individual to work in a dynamic and innovatice archives and records
program.  Provides reference and research services to UFT administration,
staff, and other archives users.  Assists department with research
appointments and photo research requests related to the UFT archival
collection.  Helps staff with processing, maintaining and precerving the
physical and historical integrity of the organization's officer and
departmental records.  Participates in outreach activities, including
archival support for programs, exhibits and publications related to the
history of the UFT, in addition to collection development, conservation
planning and preservation projects.

Helps create collection inventories and guides; prepare accessions forms and
cataloging worksheets; develop preservation recommendations; assist with
acquisitions and transfers of UFT archival materials; and creation of
database entries in the UFT Record Center's records management GAIN software
program.

Qualifications:

                Must have a MA or MLS in history, American studies,
education, or library science (graduate degree in archival studies preferred)
with training and experience in archives department or repository.  Must have
archives processing and reference experience.  Graduate student with
course-work in archival methods, theory, and familiarity with collections
processing considered.  Must be personable and able to work effectively in a
busy, service-oriented department.

Preferred Qualifications:

                MA/MLS degree in history, library science, education, or
related field with training and experience in archives appraisal and
reference activities.  Prefer archivist with 2 - 4 years of experience in
processing and answering research questions related to large, organizational
records collections.

Skills:

                Must have demonstrated excellent oral, written, and
interpersonal communication skills; ability to work as part of a team and to
problem solve from an institution-wide perspective; must have both an
understanding and commitment to the use of computing and other technologies
in the archives and records management program.  Membership and professional
participation in appropriate professional associations expected.  Must be
proficient in Microsoft Word 97, MS Office 95, Excel, and Access software.
