Re: Electronic Archive

Here's one work-around for old Word documents. Take myfile.doc, rename it
to myfile.txt, open in Word 7 or whatever as a text file, delete
formatting codes (the top third of the document and the bottom third of
the document). Just delete all the weird stuff. Save as newfilename.txt.

Now, it won't be pretty, in fact it will be pretty ugly, but most of the
actual text is there. You might need to add some paragraph markers and so
on. But it shouldn't be any less readable than Deborah's message on my
email reader. <G>

Word 5 (DOS) files can't even be opened in Word 97 and later, let alone printed, unless there's a work around I'm unaware of. To migrate them, you have to either open them in Word 5 and save as RTF or in Word 6 (which will read Word 5) and save as a Word for Windows document. So, we can't just document the changes in software, we have to keep copies on hand and know how to use them--assuming we're willing to spend the time necessary to 'reformat' (either printing or upgrading) the documents file by file. </P>
