University History Conference - Berkeley, California

Re: April 25-26 All-UC Conference on University History

Dear Colleagues:

This is to solicit your interest in an upcoming All-UC Conference on University History on April 25 and 26, 2002, on the UC Berkeley Campus,
and to request a response by February 8 to the brief survey attached (send response to sthomas@library.berkeley.edu).
The Center for Studies in Higher Education is sponsoring this conference to explore issues related to the history of the University of California's
nine-campus system. Co-organizers include The Bancroft Library, the Regional Oral History Office, and the UC Office of the President.

We hope to discuss scholarly activities in the field of university history, and to build a sense of community among those engaged in research,
writing, teaching, and archival management related to higher education and the UC system. We also welcome participants whose general
interest is the historical role of higher education in society.

Below is a preliminary program. All events will take place at the Townsend Center for the Humanities on the UC Berkeley campus.

All-UC Conference on University History
April 25-26, 2002

Organized by the UC History Digital Archive Project, the Center for Studies in Higher Education, The Bancroft Library, the Regional
Oral History Office -- UC Berkeley, and the UC Office of the President.

Thursday, April 25
1:00 PM - 3:30 PM -- Symposium: Tentative Title - "Shaping the University of California: Looking Back While Moving Forward - An Historical
and Contemporary Examination"

A panel including UC Presidents Emeriti David Gardner and Jack Peltason, and UC Santa Cruz Chancellor Emeritus Karl Pister, will discuss
past and future challenges for the University of California as it faces another wave of enrollment growth and changing demographics. This event
will be held to celebrate the completion of the oral history project "The Office of the President and Its Constituents: 1983-1995" by the Regional
Oral History Office - The Bancroft Library.

3:45 PM - 5:30 PM -- A Working Meeting on UC History Archival Management: Options for the Future

The increased existence of electronic records and the ability to digitize paper records open up new perspectives, potentialities, and problems
for the university's records managers and University Archives. Chaired by UCLA University Archivist Charlotte Brown.

Reception 6:00 PM - 7:00 PM

Friday, April 26

9:30 AM - 4:00 PM -- A program that will feature:

· Speakers who have recently completed or are in the process of writing UC-related histories, including a session with UC Presidents Emeriti
David Gardner and Clark Kerr on the process of writing their respective memoirs.

· A panel and discussion on current activities within the University of California to research and write on topics related to the history of the nine-,
soon to be ten-, campus system, and strategies for promoting institutional memory.

· A presentation on the design and content of the new UC History Digital Archives (UCHDA) based at the CSHE and The Bancroft Library. The
UCHDA is building an online collection of primary historical documents and images related to the history of the University of California; it will
include core collections of the minutes of the Academic Council and the UC Regents, as well as the complete series of In Memoriam
(biographies/memorials of deceased faculty members and administrators), and other thematic and general resources, including a Web resource
on the California Master Plan for Higher Education.

· A discussion on whether to plan an additional All-UC conference on this topic for next year, and potential future content of the Universitywide
UC history journal Chronicle of the University of California.

We seek your input and ideas on how to promote institutional memory and high quality historical analysis.

Please mark your calendars for this conference, and we hope you will forward this e-mail message to others who might want to attend. Seating
will be limited.

A formal program and RSVP information will be forthcoming, partially based on the survey responses.
