Associate Curator of Archives, Harvard University Art Museums

The Archives of the Harvard University Art Museums consist of
approximately 567 feet of paper documents, photographs, publications,
scrapbooks, video and audio tapes, films, and ephemera. Dating from
the founding of the Fogg Art Museum in 1895, the Archives are an
important source for researchers on the history of the Art Museums'
various buildings, institutions, collections, and staff; of the
teaching of art history in the United States; of the history of art
conservation in this country; and of the training of many important
curators, conservators, and directors of the last century.

Responsibilities:
Plans and directs the activities of the Archives, a separate
department that reports to the Director of the Art Museums. Arranges
and describes the permanently valuable records in all formats,
including electronic media; evaluates and administers preservation;
acquires additional material to complement existing collection;
develops and implements procedures and regulations for making these
records accessible to staff and other appropriate researchers; plans
and directs the records management program, which ensures the
transfer of non-current departmental records to the Archives; attends
to storage, retrieval, and disposition of all records according to
standard records management practice and guidelines established by
the Governing Boards of Harvard University; represents and promotes
the Archives within the Art Museums and to the research community at
large; encodes finding aids compatible with OASIS (catalogue for
archival collections at Harvard); assists in the design of the
Archives Web site; supervises 1 part-time archivist; volunteers,
interns, and student employees may also be supervised; participates
in development of publications based on Archives holdings;
establishes goals and monitors workflow; prepares budget and annual
report; participates in fund raising and other development
activities; participates in master-planning process for expanded and
renovated facilities.

Qualifications:
MLS or equivalent with relevant coursework or certification required;
second master's degree in history/archives/art history with record of
publication preferred; 4-6 years related professional work
experience; significant archival work in recognized repository
desired; thorough understanding of cataloguing issues; demonstrated
understanding of legal issues pertaining to work with unpublished
collections including copyright, privacy, confidentiality,
right-to-know, and ownership; ability to communicate clearly, both
orally and in writing; supervisory experience; strong problem-solving
and interpersonal skills; strong computer skills.
