 The University of Pittsburgh's University Library System is
currently recruiting for the position of Head, Archives Service Center.  The
Archives Service Center (ASC) is composed of the Archives of Industrial
Society, United Electrical Workers/Labor Archives, the University Archives
and University Records Management, and the State and Local Government
Archives, among others.

 The Archives Service Center focuses on collecting original resource
material related to the business, ethnic, urban, labor, environmental,
political, social, and cultural history of Pittsburgh and southwestern
Pennsylvania.  The ASC houses the Archives of Industrial Society comprising
626 collections of individuals, businesses, churches, institutions,
organizations, and ethnic groups; Environmental Collections including Samuel
P. and Barbara Hays Environmental Collections, Sierra Club-Pennsylvania,
Environmental Action Foundation, among others; United Electrical
Workers/Labor Collections, depository for the United Electrical, Radio, and
Machine Workers Union, plus other labor union and labor related collections;
selective local government records of Pittsburgh and Allegheny County;
Pittsburgh City Photographer Collection; oral history tapes focusing on
political history and Black sport history.  The holdings comprise 2,000+
volumes, 13,464 linear feet of manuscripts and records, 13,935 microforms;
4,925 reels of 16mm film; 1,127 videotapes; 110,000+ photographic negatives,
prints, plants, and slides.

 The Archives Service Center also serves as the University Archives
and Records Management for the University of Pittsburgh.  In addition to
records of the official activities of the University's administrative and
academic departments, the University Archives contains personal faculty
papers and records.  The Records Management program offers its services to
all administrative and academic units and coordinates the offsite storage of
inactive records with an outside vendor.  The holdings comprise 4,400+
volumes, 53 collections comprising 3,575 linear feet of records and
manuscripts; 31,600+ microforms, 500 films; 14,000+ photographs; 720 sound
recordings; 3,900 slides; and 439 drawings and prints.


Responsibilities

Under the general direction of the Assistant University Librarian, the Head
of the Archives Service Center is responsible for the administration of the
staff, services, collections, and activities of the Archives Service Center.
The ASC is comprised of six faculty librarians-archivists, two staff
members, student assistants, and grant funded positions.

With general responsibility for supervising all aspects of the Archives
Service Center's program and activities, the Head of the ASC:

-hires, supervises and evaluates ASC faculty and staff (in accordance with
ULS and University personnel administration policies)

-develops, as needed, and manages the operating budget and special
gift/grant
budgets

-interprets general University Library System policies as they relate to the
ASC

-serves as central liaison with other University Library System librarians
and with
faculty, visiting scholars, and students with particular emphasis on the
Preservation Department and the Digital Research Library

-develops and implements policies, procedures, rules and regulations
regarding all archival and records management activities, including
acquisition of original records and papers and printed materials,
arrangement and description, including Encoded Archival Description,
reference service, reformatting via microfilm or other means, and records
management activities

-coordinates, conducts and participates in University Library System
strategic planning activities and develops short and long-term goals and
objectives for the ASC and its faculty and staff members

-coordinates all fund-raising and public relations efforts with the
University
Library System administration

-participates in ULS and University committees and activities

-promotes the ASC locally, nationally, and internationally and participates
in related professional organizations and activities

  -prepares reports, analyses, and recommendations

Qualifications

Required: ALA-accredited MLS (or recognized equivalent) plus five to seven
years of progressive administrative experience in an archives-special
library setting; a Ph.D. in the social sciences or the humanities with an
archival-records management emphasis is preferred.  Ability to communicate
effectively and work with faculty, students, and library staff of diverse
cultural backgrounds; good oral and written communication skills, including
the demonstrated ability to write successful grant proposals; a record of
appropriate publishing and professional activities, and supervisory
experience; knowledge of current archival control systems, including
electronic record systems; and general knowledge of computer applications in
an archives-records management setting.

Librarians at the University of Pittsburgh are members of the faculty and
are expected to contribute significantly to the profession as well as to
perform their specific responsibilities.  Successful reviews at years 3 and
6 lead to the granting of Expectation of Continuing Employment.

Salary:  Commensurate with experience.  Comprehensive benefits package
