Re: Name Change and Arming America--Getting Our Priorities Straight

OK, I'll try to increase that to 19 and 8.

Pity the poor princess who would voluntarily choose to "accession" my last
name. It took ME most of the 1st grade to learn how to spell it properly!

Now for something semi-serious:

I took a look at the SAA code of ethics regarding the disclosure of
information about researchers. Article IX states, "Archivists endeavor to
inform users of parallel research by others using the same materials, and,
if the individuals concerned agree, supply each name to the other party."
This does not directly address whether an institution should reveal to the
media or general public that Professor Bellesiles (or any other individual)
did NOT pass through their doors. However, the commentary, while still
discussing the disclosure of information to other researchers, does say,
"When their is any question, the consent of the previous researcher should
be obtained."

The spirit of this article seems to be, if in doubt, reveal nothing.
Personally, I would be very uncomfortable revealing whether or not someone
had conducted research at my institution, unless I had the individual's
permission or a court order. The Contra Costa County Historical Society's
page about this affair may have been put up with the best of intentions,
but I find it improper for them to publicly display when Bellesiles does
(and does not) appear in the guest register. Their defense against his
claims about the Society's staff is fine; their rebuttal to his public
claims about what is in their collections is appropriate; their disclosure
of guest register information is an unnecessary part of their argument.

And so far as that dissertation author is concerned, does Steven Spielberg
get the name of everyone who rented "Saving Private Ryan?"
