Re: antebellum banking transactions

Definitions might have changed some over the years. It is always wise to
consult a source of the time, not a current Black's. I am not sure if
Black's was even published back then. I have assisted attorneys who wanted
dictionaries and sources of the time....what seemed to constitute a
definition at one time changed over the next couple decades. What is the
real definition, vs. a layman's interpretation.

Carol:
You might look up these terms in Black's Law Dictionary. Any larger library
should have a copy.

For a project related to the internal slave trade, we are trying to make
sense out of bank ledgers from the Bank of the United States, Natchez
office. The transactions are recorded for 1831 and 1832. Our questions
concern the relationships between "indorsers," "drawers," and those whose
accounts were "drawn on."

Can anyone help or give us a name of someone who might?
