Subject: Withdrawn applications
Hello all on the list!
I have a question. There is one box sitting here staring at me while I am
staring at it...either waiting to be processed or discarded. I work in an
academic archives (high school). The school used to also run a children's
school which has since closed. All documents pertaining to the children's
school has come to me. I have processed most of the collection--except for
this box of withdrawn applications. I am puzzled as to whether I should
keep this or not. My first instinct is to process them (KEEP THEM)--that
there should be a record of who actually applied to the school. I will
probably keep them. I would just like to hear what some of you may do in
this situation.
Any suggestions?

records management point of view you can check and see if New York State has a
retention schedule covering withdrawn applications. Secondly there may be
privacy issues depending on what information is on the applications. From an
archival point of view I can't see any good reason to keep them.
