                          Ferris State University

Ferris State University, a national leader in career-oriented,
technological, and professional education, is currently recruiting for the
position of  Archivist/Special Collections Librarian.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Identifies, acquires, organizes, preserves, describes, promotes, and
facilitates the use of archival, manuscript and special collections
(primarily FSU-related, local history, and Michigan history).  Works with
University administrative and secretarial staff to further develop the
University-wide program to manage records and special collections in all
formats in accordance with state guidelines and professional best
practices.  Works with information technology managers on issues of
electronic access.  Creates and maintains computer bibliographic database.
Maintains the confidentiality of designated information.  Supervises
assigned student workers.  Assists in defining collection policies and
strategic planning.  Will assist in planning a new Archives facility.
Reports directly to the Dean of the Library.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Required:  ALA-accredited masters degree in Library or Information Science.
Appropriate experience or training in archives and/or manuscripts; in
records management; and in the preservation, care, and storage of
historical materials and objects.  Demonstrated organizational,
interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.  Familiarity in
using electronic files and folders, word processing, spreadsheets, and the
Web; familiarity with computer applications for archives and manuscripts.
Preferred:  Work experience in an academic library, experience in Web
content development, interest in and knowledge of Michigan history, an
additional graduate degree.

SALARY:
$32,000-$40,000 for a 12-month tenure-track faculty appointment with rank,
plus an excellent benefits package valued at approximately 36% of base
salary.  Comprehensive benefits (after applicable eligibility and accrual
periods) include 20 days vacation, two days personal leave, paid holidays,
insurance (health, dental, vision, life, disability), medical reimbursement
account, retirement system options (e.g., TIAA-CREF, Fidelity) with 12%
University contribution, tuition waiver, and generous support for
professional activities.

DESCRIPTION OF FERRIS STATE UNIVERSITY AND THE SURROUNDING COMMUNITY:
Serving close to 10,000 students, Ferris State University offers 120
academic programs in a diversity of disciplines, with graduate and
professional programs in optometry, pharmacy, criminal justice
administration, information systems management, and education.  FLITE
(Ferris Library for Information, Technology, and Education), our new,
highly electronic, technologically advanced library facility, opened in
March, 2001.  At 173,000 sq. ft. FLITE is three times the size of the
former library building and features a variety of public work and study
spaces, a total seating capacity of 1,300, and computer connectivity for
more than 1,000 users.  The library recently migrated to the Innovative
Interfaces Millennium system.
Ferris's main campus is located in Big Rapids, Michigan, a city of 12,000
located on the picturesque Muskegon River, 55 miles north of Grand Rapids
and within 220 miles of Detroit and Chicago.  Nestled in the middle of
western Michigan's vacation heartland, this former logging community offers
a variety of recreational opportunities, including canoeing, tubing, and
fishing on the Muskegon; biking, hiking, and cross-country skiing on the
White Pine trail; camping in four county parks; and boating, swimming, and
fishing on many of the 101 lakes in Mecosta County.  Some of the Midwest's
best ski resorts are to the north; immediately to the west is the Manistee
National Forest and Lake Michigan (60 miles from campus).  For more
