Workshops at the Midwest Archives Conference - Going Fast!



The Spring meeting of the Midwest Archives Conference in Minneapolis
provides a number of outstanding continuing education opportunities for
archivists in the midwest and beyond.  One pre-conference workshop
(Metadata for Archivists and Recordkeepers) has already filled, but five
others still have openings.

"Stylesheets -- EAD Part 2." This SAA-sponsored two-day workshop meets
on Tuesday-Wednesday, April 30-May 1 in the University of Minnesota's
Wilson Library.  Instructors Michael Fox and Kris Kiesling present an
interactive, hands-on workshop that introduces participants to
stylesheet languages, particularly Extensible Stylesheet Language
Transformation (XSLT), to present archival finding aids over the web.

MAC has arranged four half-day workshops, all scheduled for Thursday,
May 2.  You must be registered for the MAC conference to attend these
workshops.

"Records Management 101." University of Minnesota records manager Susan
McKinney will provide a basic introduction to all aspects of a records
management program, including inventories, scheduling, vital records,
disaster planning, electronic records, and techniques of presenting the
need for records management to institutional administrators.  $35 fee.
Enrollment limited to 50

"EAD Cookbook."  University of Illinois assistant university archivist
Chris Prom will describe simplified ways to encode archival finding aids
to present them on the web.  The hands-on workshop provides experience
with enconding, writing macros and editing stylesheets to provide
different display options.  $35 fee.  Enrollment limited to 20.

"Disaster Response and Recovery Planning:  How to Plan for When
Everything Goes Wrong."  Workshop leader and consultant Miriam Kahn
outlines methods of planning for disasters and designing a recovery
plan.  Issues presented include insurance, water damage, recovery of
automated systems and information services, and staffing.  $35 fee.
Enrollment limited to 35.

"Basic Preservation Container Construction." Paper conservator Jana Lee
Pullman of the Minnesota Center for Book Arts will train participants to
make wrappers, hard covers, envelopes, and pockets to protect
hard-to-store items in your collection.  All necessary supplies are
included in the registration fee.  $50 fee. Enrollment limited to 20.
