The Red Cross symbol

Dear Colleagues:
A potential donor has told us that he recently purchased a wooden "U.S.
Army Field Desk" bearing the Red Cross symbol, and wishes to offer it to the
National Civil War Museum in Harrisburg, PA. My preliminary research shows
that the the term "Red Cross" was first used in 1863. That's good, but...I
can't find any specific date for the use of the "Red Cross" symbol.
Can any of you help me to date (and value) this wooden Army Field Desk?
Thank you.
        Sincerely,
           Elayne Goyette, Archivist
           The National Civil War Museum
