Nearing St. Pat's Day

Archivists,
Rossell Galbraith O'Brien enlisted at the age of 17 as
private of Co. "D" 134th Ill. Vol. Infantry, May 12,
1864. He served in the campaign in Kentucky, and later
in the campaign against General Stirling Price, in
Missouri, until mustered out. He was later the
organizer of the national Guard of the Territory and
State of Washington, and was familiarly known as
'The Father of the National Guard of Washington."
Every archivist has in essence celebrated this man's
actions many times over, especially in the days after
the tragedy of 9/11. Any idea why the action of this
man, who was born in 1847, still influences our
individual behavior today?
