Re: Reference/Research Services

Emily:
These are very good questions - ones that as budgets shrink and funds for
operations grow less and less - archives across the country will have to
face. We here are the Arkansas State Archives do not charge a "research
fee". We leave this type of research to the paid professionals. However, we
do charge for photocopies, photographs, etc. Several years we started a
"minimum" fee schedule. This is $10.00 for our of state orders and $5.00 for
in state orders. Funds raised through these fees and sales go into a special
fund to help pay for equipment and supplies of our microfilming and
photocopying program. I note that several other state archives - namely GA
and NC - do have a minimum research charge. We do not sell goods, gifts,
books, or memorabilia. However, this is always a possible source of future
revenue.
I am chairing a panel discuss at the SAA 2002 meeting about archival
references services. I would like to have a summary of the comments you
receive. This is a very important but little discussion part of reference
services.

Good Morning,

Our organization is in the process of reviewing our archive's reference
policies. We would like to know from listserv subscribers what your
practices are regarding charging fees for your reference/research services.
These would include both external and internal reference/research requests.

A second question we have for listserv members concerns acquiring copies of
your organization's merchandise for its archives. In short, are any of your
budgets charged for copies of your organization's goods or memorabilia
(books, coffee mugs, tote bags, etc.)?

Thank you in advance for your responses!
