academic history orientation for a bit. If you are a workman and are
digging into a wall or opening up a sidewalk you want to be damned sure you
know what's in there. It has nothing to do with an overview of the
architectural history of the institution (which is nice too) and everything
to do with personal safety of workmen and avoidance of disasters. If the
archives doesn't have room to keep the detailed plans, then arrangements
should be made for someone else to keep them (all of them).

Also in this day and age architectural drawings will be produced (generally)
from AutoCad or some other software product. A back up of that would be nice
since the work is done in layers. Paper drawings are produced primarily
becuase they require a 'wet' signature by the engineer and architect. this
requirement may have changed with the advent of digital/electronic
signatures. You will also want not only the 'as-builts' but also the
original drawings.

Get to know your building operations/facilities management folks (they can
usually be found in the bowels of the complex with all the machinery). Give
them of tour of the archives and show them how you can be an advantage to
them.

Good luck
