Outreach - Family Preservation

We are investigating the possibility of taking a preservation
class/presentation/workshop to a variety of venues around our state. The
presentation would involve showing a couple of films from our collection and
then giving a presentation about proper techniques for housing, storing, and
maintaining family papers, photographs, films, videos, etc.... We are
hoping to use the presentation as a way to talk to potential donors, but
most importantly, to get people to think about their family memorabilia as
historically important and worth preserving.

If you and/or your archives have conducted programs like this and taken them
on the road, I would be interested to hear about your experience.

We are trying to think of ways to gather people for such an event. How do
you promote an event that is not "in your neighborhood?" We don't have
contacts in many of these communities. We have considered contacting public
libraries and drawing on their patron bases, but we would like other ideas
(we are trying to reach the people interested in family history, but also
groups of people who may not have considered the significance of family
history).

We would also like suggestions for funding the travel of such an event.
There are some grants that seem to fit the program, but I would be
interested in knowing about creative funding as well.

So please let us know about events that have worked -- and even those events
that have failed.

Thanks,
Val
