Dr. Susan K. Martin was born in Cambridge, England, and grew up in the
greater Boston area. She is President of SKM Associates, Inc., a consulting
firm located in Massachusetts. Library automation and networking have been
the focus of most of Dr. Martin's articles and books, with a significant
minority also probing issues surrounding fund-raising and development.
Immediately prior to SKM Associates, she held the position of University
Librarian at Georgetown University. Prior positions include Executive
Director of the National Commission on Libraries and Information Science,
director of the Milton S. Eisenhower Library at Johns Hopkins University,
and head of the library systems office at the University of California,
Berkeley.

During her career, she has been a consultant for numerous libraries and
companies, chiefly in the areas of library management and technology - a
sideline that has most recently become the focus of her consulting firm.
With her new career, Dr. Martin has become a member of the Marstons Mills
Public Library Board of Trustees, and of the Board of Overseers of the Tufts
University School of Arts and Sciences. She was the recipient of the 1976
Simmons College Distinguished Alumni Award, and has held many offices,
committee appointments, and advisory committee memberships in organizations
such as the Association of Research Libraries, the American Library
Association, and the Research Libraries Group. She was president of the
Library Information and Technology Association in the early 1980s, and of
the Association of College and Research Libraries more recently. She is also
a member of the Cranberry Shores Sweet Adelines chorus.
