The Missouri Historical Society seeks experienced
candidates for the position of Associate
Archivist. Collections in the Archives include
18th, 19th, and 20th century materials, primarily
in English but also French, Spanish, and German
items. The collections focus on St. Louis and
the development of the American West with such
highlights as the papers of William Clark and
Thomas Jefferson, the records of the Louisiana
Purchase Exposition Company (1904 World's Fair),
and collections covering topics such as the fur
trade and early business in the Louisiana
Territory, 18th and 19th century politics, and
Missouri in the Civil War.
POSITION DESCRIPTION:
JOB TITLE: Associate Archivist
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Master's degree in library science, history, or
related field
WORK EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
At least 3-5 years of work experience in an
archival repository, special collections
department of a library, or equivalent
SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES TO PERFORM JOB:
REQUIRED:
Knowledge of all aspects of archival
administration; familiarity with the special
preservation and access needs associated with
various types of collections including
organizational/business records, architectural
drawings/oversize materials, bound
volumes/scrapbooks, personal papers, and
artificial collections
Substantial knowledge of history and historical
method
Strong organizational skills
Excellent verbal and written communication
skills
Extensive archival arrangement and description
experience
Ability to work with minimal day-to-day
supervision
Must be able to work Saturdays on a rotating
basis
Proficiency with basic computer applications,
especially IBM compatible
Ability to handle large, heavy and fragile
materials; ability to reach shelves; ability to
traverse grate floor, utilize stairs
PREFERRED:
Ability to manage archival databases
Knowledge of the MARC-AMC format, familiarity
with bibliographic utilities and name authority
Experience with web site development
Knowledge of the issues involved in archives
digitization projects
Active in professional archival
organization(s).
DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
Reports to the Archivist
Work with staff of three professional
archivists and one paraprofessional in all
aspects of the management of the archival
collections in an historical manuscripts
repository. This includes acquisitions and
collections development, accessioning and
documentation of the collections, arrangement and
description, cataloguing collections in the
online library catalog according to MARC-AMC
standards, and basic preservation of the
collections.
Provide reference assistance to public and
staff researchers via the Archives reference
desk, telephone, and email.
Assist in the development and/or implementation
of Archives policies and procedures as they
relate to arrangement, description,
reference/access, and cataloguing.
Must be able to recruit, train and supervise
interns and volunteers.
Assist with administrative responsibilities as
needed.
Assist the Archivist with tracking archives
materials in museum exhibits.
Work with staff throughout the institution to
assist in executing the policies and procedures
of the institution and in furthering
institutional initiatives as required.
