Re: movies and archives

Since this thread appeared on the records managers listserve (or was it
archives?!)I have seen two films that illustrated the significance of
archives and records repositories(more the latter).

While not a positive portrayal, unfortunately it may be a bit accurate, Erin
Brokovich.
The water district records that Erin rummages through to find the evidence
helping to prove the case against the big bad corporation. Interestingly
enough the "mean old person in the dusty basement" the stereotype is not
perpetuated. Rather it is replaced by an equally offensive "young quirky
horny clueless doofus" stereotype. This new stereotype will probably be the
norm.

Monsters Inc.!
Speaking of perpetuating the "mean old person in the dusty basement"...
Although Roz was technically the "Dispatch Manager," it (remember a slug is
both he/she)stressed the significance of proper file management. However,
in the end Roz "does good." On a completely unrelated note Monsters inc. is
probably the only positive portrayal of a slug in recent memory. In Shrek,
the venerable slug is simply Shrek's dinner!

And a reprise: the archives scene in Lord of the Rings - when Gandalf looks
for the history of the Ring he is shown going through what can best be
described as a mess of documents. In the book the wizard spends loads of
time researching the history of the Ring, making one believe that if he was
such a great wizard he simply would have run a google spell and have all the
docs he needed rise to the top in order of relevance!

We've had this thread before so you may wish to check the records manager
and archives listserv archives.

I have question for the list: Can anybody recommend a film or scene in a
film that gets the archivists job right? I'm thinking maybe something
along the lines of Rupert Giles from the earlier seasons of Buffy the
Vampire Slayer, but he's more of a librarian. Of course I checked
the listserv archives first. :) Any thoughts or suggestions would be
appreciated.
