Re: Another Copyright Situation

Many years ago, when I worked at the Kentucky State Archives, we had 19th
and early 20th-century birth records from various counties which registered
out-of-wedlock births in special books emblazoned with the words BASTARD
BIRTHS in all-caps, gold lettering on the spine. We never made any
distinction between "regular" birth registers and the "bastard" books.
Unless there has been a change of heart since I left, I would think that
they are still considered public records like any other and made available
in any format, including microfilming.

Subject: Another Copyright Situation

I was told from a curator in a neighboring town that they could not
microfilm local records of Births, deaths and marriages
that were created after 1840...because of references to outof wedlockbirths
that may or maynot appear in these records.
It is apparently a Mass. law. Has anyone encountered such a situation?
