GMDs (General Material Designation) in cataloging

As the Society of American Archivists' liaison to the American Library
Association's Cataloging Committee on Description and Access (CC:DA), I
solicit your opinions on the current topic of discussion:

Should the cataloging community retain the use of GMDs (General Material
Designation) in the title field of a catalog record? Used with the
subfield h, the GMD, in brackets, indicates the what the item or collection
consists of, e.g., art original, cartographic material, manuscript,
microform, realia, sound recording, etc. This is especially useful for
literary collections if the repository has the manuscript of a published
book and wants to distinguish between the two, or the title of an item does
not readily convey that it is an art original, a microform version,
etc. The list of GMDs is in the Anglo-American Cataloging Rules 2nd ed.
revised, section 1.1C1.

Examples would be:

       245 14 The sun also rises |h [manuscript], |f 1926.

       245 10 Florida waves |h [art original], |f 1990.

       245 10 Virginia capitol |h [model], |f 1786.

Please let me know your opinions on retaining or eliminating the use of
GMDs in cataloging.
