Sticky photos

I'm a historian of psychology, working with the archives of a professional association to catalog its collection of photographs. Most of these photos have been used in the association's publications at one time or another. Many of them are waxed on the back or have some kind of double-sided tape on the back, used to stick them to a layout sheet during the publication process. I received the stacked together in folders and some of them were stuck together with the wax or tape.

I've carefully peeled apart the photos that were stuck together. I'd planned to place a sheet of archival paper behind each sticky photo before putting it in a sleeve, but the photo sticks to the backing sheet, of course, which may be troublesome to a user later on.

I'm emerging from lurkdom to ask the pros whether I should worry about the photos sticking to the backing sheet and, if so, whether there's any conventional remedy for this, like dusting the sticky stuff with a power or something. I'm sure the wax and tape can't be good for the long-term life of the photo, but there seems to be no way to safely remove it.

Best wishes, and thanks for any advice.
