Leo V. Berger Fellowships in Maryland Jewish History

The Jewish Museum of Maryland is pleased to announce the Leo V. Berger Fellowships in Maryland Jewish History.

The Museum is now accepting applications for summer 2002 and for the 2002-2003 academic year. Two fellowships of up to $1,500 will be awarded.

The Leo V. Berger Fellowships were established to promote and expand knowledge of Maryland Jewish history and culture. Applicants are invited to submit proposals for original research that relies on the resources of the Jewish Museum of Maryland. Fellowship stipends, which support research and writing, can be applied to transportation, lodging, and other living expenses.

The Jewish Museum of Maryland

The Jewish Museum of Maryland has developed the largest and widest-ranging collection of regional Jewish Americana in the US. Collections encompass original material from the 18th century to the present, including historical objects, artwork, textiles, archival materials, costume, photographs, ephemera, oral history, sound recordings, and books. The cornerstones of the Museum?s collections are its two National Register synagogues, the Greek Revival Lloyd Street Synagogue (1845) and the Moorish Revival B?nai Israel Synagogue (1876).

The Museum owns 3,311 three-dimensional artifacts, which range from exquisite Judaic objects to the remnants of everyday life that reveal information about disappearing folkways or domestic practices as well as contemporary mores. The Museum?s collections also encompass 953 textiles and 170 paintings by notable artists such as Reuben Kramer, Aaron Sopher, and Jacob Glushakow.

The Museum?s archival collection contains 865 linear feet of documents, including the records of community groups, religious organizations, and businesses. The collection is particularly strong in papers from notable Maryland families, documenting the seminal role they played in Jewish and community life. The Museum?s photographic holdings, estimated at 89,000 items, include images of Jewish life, neighborhoods, social and home life, religious observance, and portraits of notable Marylanders. It consists of daguerreotypes, prints, negatives, slides, and contact sheets. The library includes approximately 3,000 books, more than 600 rare books, and numerous periodicals. In addition, the Museum has 51 linear feet of research material housed in vertical files.
