ART May Meeting

Archivists Round Table of Metropolitan New York
MAY 2002 MEETING NOTICE

From Boats to Beaks: A Tour of the Binnenwater and Boathouse Restoration
in Prospect Park.

Join Julie Moffat, Rachel Keegan and Amy Peck for a tour of the Binnenwater
restoration project in Prospect Park ending with a reception in the newly
restored Prospect Park Audubon Center at the Boathouse the first urban
Audubon Center in the country. An exhibition curated by Rachel Keegan -
documenting the history of the Boathouse will be available for viewing. We
will begin the tour in front of the Picnic House in Prospect Park and walk
through the restored Ravine, the Binnenwater project and end up at the
Boathouse. If time permits we will also walk by a rustic arbor (from the
Park's original design) that is in the midst of being rebuilt according to
historic photographs. If you would like to bring binoculars you may even
see the hawks in addition to the many other birds that make Prospect Park
their home.

The Archives' goal is to collect, preserve, and make accessible to the
public, free of charge, those records which promote an understanding and
appreciation of the restoration and preservation of this historic
Park. Literally every restoration project completed in Prospect Park since
1990 has relied heavily upon the use of historic photos and plans. This
tour will explain the innovative role the Archives plays in the
reconstruction/restoration process. The Prospect Park Archives are an
invaluable tool to Prospect Park's landscape architects, engineers,
architects, and historic preservationists, and serve to enhance the quality
of current and future restoration projects. In addition, the collections
have important historical research value for outside landscape architects,
urban planners, architects, historians, as well as writers, filmmakers,
scholars, and the general public.

Julie Moffat was the Archivist/Historian for the Prospect Park Alliance
from 1999 through the beginning of May 2002. Prior to this position, Ms.

History and Museum Studies from the City University of New York and an
undergraduate degree in Art History from McGill University (Montreal,
Canada.) In 1998 she attended, on scholarship, the Modern Archives
Institute in Washington, D.C. Julie is now working for the Winthrop Group
as a consultant.

Rachel Keegan joined the Archives staff at the Prospect Park Alliance as
Assistant Archivist/Records Manager in 2001. Her primary responsibility
has been to establish a records management program for the Park. Ms.
Keegan received a Master of Science in Library and Information Science with

Simmons College. Prior to this position she worked as archivist at the
Schlesinger Library in Cambridge, Massachusetts; the Northeastern
University Archives and Special Collections in Boston, Massachusetts; and
