Assistant Archivist, Technical Services
Archives & Special Collections
Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation
Salary: commensurate with qualifications and experience

The Assistant Archivist, Technical Services, reports to the Head of the
Archives & Special Collections, and has responsibility for managing
collection accessioning, cataloging and processing; and supervises an
Archives Technician.  The Assistant Archivist creates finding aids, and
other reference tools for inclusion in automated and manual systems, using
standards for SGML and EAD.  The Assistant Archivist performs original
collection and item-level description and subject cataloging for a variety
of materials found in the Archives & Special Collections.  Follows USMARC
format for RLIN and OCLC using current descriptive standards including
APPM.  The Assistant Archivist determines appropriate preservation measures
and shares responsibility for maintaining the collection location
database.  Reports current status of collections and preservation needs to
appropriate staff.  The Assistant Archivist also trains and supervises the
Archives Technician in performing routine procedures.

The applicant should have the ability to work productively and communicate
effectively with diverse groups, have the ability to work independently,
plan work flow, identify problems, and suggest solutions in the form of
revisions and changes to policies and procedures.  This position requires
an incumbent with excellent oral and written communication skills, and
effective interpersonal skills.

Education and Experience:
Master's degree in Library and Information Science from an ALA-accredited
program with a specialization in archival administration, or a Master's
degree in History with a concentration in archival administration.  A
second graduate degree in Native American studies, anthropology, or
American history is preferred.  Two to three years of experience in an
archival setting.  Experience and expertise in MARC cataloging is a must.

Computer skills: The fulfillment of the duties of this position requires
knowledge in MS Word, Access, and Outlook; Online Public Access Catalogs
found in most libraries; a Voyager local system; receiving and sending e-
mail communications; and knowledge of Internet navigation.
