Re: Archival careers

Forgive me for my ignorance, but you don't have to be involved in
Library Science at all to work in archives! I have a grad degree in
Historic Preservation (predominantly administration and conservation)
and have a bunch of experience in archives. It all really depends on
HOW you plan on treating the artefacts. Would you want to treat them as
books/information to be cataloged, or artefacts to be cared for? When
I've set up archives I see it as a museum with the library/research
aspect of it as a side note. The artefacts need to be cataloged,
conserved, preserved, etc and a handling guideline set up (which would
include basically everything on the research/'library' side of things as
well)

When studying for the MLS, do you take classes in conservation and
preservation?

Gunnar, Molly and friends --

There is another reason why an archives position might require an MLS --
besides the notion that librarians are insecure people who are
comfortable
only with "one of their own"!

In many institutions, the archives position is part- time, and the
person
has other responsibilities in the library that do require library school
training. For instance, I work 20 hrs/wk in the Archives, and another 9
hrs/wk providing theological reference assistance. For that, I need not
just the MLS but a theology degree as well. This blend of training &
experience makes me a great deal more valuable to my employer.

A good match between individual & institution involves a lot of
variables,
some of them unpredictable.
