ACA 2003 CALL FOR PAPERS: What's History Got to Do With It?

Association of Canadian Archivists Annual Conference
Toronto, Ontario
10-14 June 2003

Most archivists, if asked, would admit that there is a connection between
history and archives, but any consensus about the nature of that connection
has fallen apart (if it ever truly existed). Since the debate in the pages
of Archivaria in the mid-1980s, the historian-archivist vs. records
manager-archivist argument has simmered just below the surface of many
professional changes. Over the last two decades, other concerns have become
more prominent in the profession's agenda: fostering a distinctive body of
knowledge of archival administration through the development of archival
studies programs, situated within information or library science programs
more often than in history or cultural studies departments; a greater
emphasis on protecting evidence through recordkeeping, rather than promoting
culture and heritage; an interventionist approach to preserving electronic
records and acquiring technical skills to do so; finding the means of
meeting the research needs of an increasingly diverse clientele well beyond
the traditional one of academic historians; and more recently, considering
the implications for the profession of postmodern thinking, which denies the
old assurances of objectivity or truth to history and to archives.

Just what does history have to do with archives? The 2003 ACA Conference
offers archivists and others an opportunity to explore the relationship
between history and archives from a number of perspectives:

* the proper place of history in the education and on-going training
and work of the archivist
* the history of archival institutions, the archival profession,
archival ideas, archival media, and famous archivists, in Canada and abroad
* the "historical" or "literary" or postmodern turn in all fields of
study looking anew at history, "the archive", and context and memory and
representation
* the archivist's own role in actively mediating the construction of
history and memory
* new fields and methodologies of history and historians as an
important client group served by archivists, including historians'
"trickle-down" influence on school texts, films, TV series, etc.
* the "history of the record" and of recordkeeping practices

These and many more aspects of the archives/history relationship may be
explored.
