Re: Acid Free Paper Claim

Almost all photocopy papers are now made using an alkaline process, with the
result being an alkaline paper. Believe it or not, it's cheaper that way.
Abbey Publications (of Abbey Newsletter fame) has this portion of its "North
American Permanent Papers" online at
<http://palimpsest.stanford.edu/byorg/abbey/napp/>.

Subject: Acid Free Paper Claim

Dear Marvin:

A photocopy paper vendor is offering general stock paper it claims is
acid free. They have a note from the supplier, Weyerhaeuser, which
claims:

"Weyerhaeuser certifies that all xerocopy grades manufactured by its
mills
are produced under alkaline conditions and are therefore acid free.
These
grades meet the requirements of ANSI Z39.48 1992(R 1997) "Permanence of
Paper
for publications and Documents in Libraries and Archives," and would
therefore
be expected to last several hundred years."

Should I believe them?
