Re: FW: Acid Free Paper Claim

Ask them what the pH is. With a range of 0-14, this scale divides between
acid and alkaline at 7, which is neutral. Below 7, the substance is
considered to be more acidic the smaller the pH number is. Above 7, the
more alkaline it is. Nothing calling itself "acid free" should have a
lower number than 7.

Subject: Acid Free Paper Claim

Dear Marvin:

A photocopy paper vendor is offering general stock paper it claims is
acid free. They have a note from the supplier, Weyerhaeuser, which
claims:
"Weyerhaeuser certifies that all xerocopy grades manufactured by its
mills are produced under alkaline conditions and are therefore acid free.
These grades meet the requirements of ANSI Z39.48 1992(R 1997) "Permanence of
Paper for publications and Documents in Libraries and Archives," and would
therefore be expected to last several hundred years."
Should I believe them?
