Re: OT:dissertation vs. book

I wondered the same thing when I read that article in the Chronicle
recently about the woman whose dissertation was set to be published
but was blocked by the Bryn Mar Academy archivist who enforced a contract
the woman had signed allowing final approval by the Academy. On first
reading it appeared she lost her tenure shot simply because her dissertation
was not published. A closer reading however points out that there appeared to
be some debate about the quality of the scholarship in the dissertation.

I doubt very much if all tenured faculty had their dissertations
published, though a goal is that the dissertation be of publication
quality. My hunch is that there was a lot more going on in the Bryn Mar
case than the Chronicle put into print.
