Job opening, Center for History of Physics, College Park, MD



The Center for History of Physics, American Institute of Physics, announces an opening for a project historian to participate in the Project to Document the History of Physicists in Industry.  The position is full-time for two years and may be extended to three years depending on funding. 
        	
Responsibilities: Working with a team of archivists, historians and sociologists, the Project Historian will play a lead role in developing, coordinating, and implementing our study of how to document the history of physicists in industry.  In addition to helping to select candidates for interviews and participating in site visits, questionnaire interviews, records surveys, and all other project activities, the historian will conduct longer in-depth interviews with senior scientists and science administrators.  The historian will also be responsible for analyzing the historical findings of the study and drafting sections of the final report.  Responsibilities include regular site visits of two to five days.

Qualifications: Ph.D. or nearly complete Ph.D. in twentieth century history, specializing in an area relevant to the study (e.g.,  science, technology, business).  Experience with oral history interviewing preferred; ability to work effectively as part of an interdisciplinary research team required.  Must be able to lift 40 lb. boxes of archival materials.
