file naming conventions

Please excuse any crossposting, but we're trying to cover all bases.

We have been digitizing our images mostly as a response to patron
requests. We now have enough scanned to make organization a problem.
Over the last few years, with different staff and students scanning,
there hasn;t been great consistency with file names. We're trying to
set a protocol now and would like to hear what others are doing.
We use accession numbers on most items, in the year/collection/item
form - 77.02.015, etc. Most of us have used underlines instead of
periods, having been raised on older operating systems that wouldn't
allow them in file names. We now are using Win2000, which doesn't care,
but not all our patrons do.
Does anyone else use a similar system? If you're avoiding periods,
is it because of a programming problem, or for consistency sake from
previous usage?
Any cross platform problem going from Windows to Unix or Mac OS?
Have any other issues arisen?
Most of our scans go to publishers or are for acccess only. We
usually scan at 600 ppi. What are others using as a default?
We also have named collections from our early days, when we didn't
envision getting more than one a year. They have accession numbers
given 25 years ago, but have always been refered to as C&S or SONJ.
They make up the majority of our 1.2 million items, so they are the
majority of scans. Does anyone else have a similar situation, and do
you use the names or numbers?
We're trying to systematize this before starting any large projects,
and any advise or comments are appreciated. Please feel free to respond
off-list.
  Many thanks.
