Re: MS-Access for photo collections

We have done this extensively at Harley-Davidson. Ironic that I received this message today, because for the first time ever, the links don't wanna open very quickly.

If you can tolerate not having any kind of thumbnail available when you look at your data, it's fine. Also, we have found that Windows 97 and later versions allow you to simply drag your image filename right into the hyperlink field, which can save consdierable time over the method of using Access' "Edit hyperlink" feature.

We are going to move out of Access into a purchased, web-based software package in the next few months, because for our purposes, having the thumbnail available right alongside the data is in high demand (but this is another set of headaches I won't get into). Access does allow you to set up an "OLE field" into which you can insert thumbnails, but DON'T do this.....Access creates a duplicate copy of each thumbnail and turns it into a bitmap, so what started as a 10K thumbnail is now a 1.5MB pair of images.

Subject: MS-Access for photo collections

Greetings, list members. I am trying to start a database for our relative small (20,000+) photograph collection. I used and very much liked DB/Textworks in the past, but have met with some resistance, so I am again considering MS-Access (and after all, we're located in Gatesland).
So, I would like to learn and have documented any experiences members have had with using Access for photo collections, *including image links,* since that is a goal. I did search the list archives (which provided some help), but it is very difficult to digest given the number of occurrences of the words and "database" and "access."
Thanks very much for any responses; I'm sure that others on the list would be interested.
