Re: universal archival symbol
May 27, 2002
My Canadian colleague Jill ten Cate asked this question on the ARCAN-L list
in 1997 and I responded with a design which I posted on my personal Web site
(no longer active at that address). The design was submitted to the
International Council on Archives (ICA) Secretariat in Paris, France, but I
don't recall receiving a reply. I subsequently collaborated with another
individual but we did not end up producing a design. This is definitely a
project the ICA should endorse and undertake.
There was also a 1995 e-mail to ARCHIVES about which animal would best serve
as symbolizing an archives.

Subject: universal archival symbol
I was wondering if anyone had ever found a medieval or
other symbol used to designate archivists apart from
others? Maybe something from the Arabs or Greeks or
Romans? Or, has someone ever designed one?
A similar thing might be the symbol adopted by the
United Methodist Church.
