Alphabet Soup: CIO Becomes COI, Starts Supervising CFO
By MARK HALL
MAY 27, 2002
No matter what anyone says, titles matter. They send a message about the job - and the person doing it.
"If you've got a CIO title, people think you're a computer guy," says Charles
Cook, vice president and general manager at A-dec Inc. in Newberg, Ore. But
the maker of dental office furniture and equipment wanted an executive to
oversee more than just IT. "We want someone to identify and streamline all of
our information needs. That's why the title is chief of information," says Cook.

A campaign has been launched to persuade Members of the European Parliament to reject proposals on data retention which critics believe will have grave civil liberties

Recognize black athletes' records
If history were colorblind, Milton Byard would be a chapter rather than a footnote in
the annals of high school sports in Georgia.
A football standout whose feats overshadow even those of Herschel Walker,
Byard was ignored by the record books because he played in an all-black league.
The only evidence of his accomplishments and those of other black athletes from
the segregation era is pasted in personal scrapbooks and buried in boxes.
