Allegheny County's new recorder of deeds is taking steps to preserve some of the

Mastering Arabic's Nuances No Easy Mission
By Valerie Strauss
Ever since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks exposed a lack of expert Arabic speakers in the U.S. government -- with key intelligence documents collecting dust for lack of translators -- there has been a hue and cry for the U.S. school system to pump out more linguists.

Document depository keeps light on agencies
By Wayne Risher
Inquiring minds can find sex, drugs and rock and roll amid the
minutiae that stuff the shelves of a regional federal document
depository in Memphis.
Best-read documents include the transcript of 1985 Senate hearings
in which rock musicians sparred with decency crusaders over
proposed warning labels on music albums.

It will now be more convenient for city high school alumni to obtain a transcript, even if the graduation date was as far back as the 1940s.
The Troy City Board of Education accepted a bid at Monday's board meeting for a new Electronic Document Management System, which will transform 44 filing cabinets of records into computer data.

[Hello Korea] Paucities of Korean Sources
By John Kie-chiang Oh
One of the most agonizing problems in writing about Korean politics and government is
the difficulty in obtaining authentic and usable Korean source materials.
Unless one is extremely determined or contractually obliged to complete a writing project, the difficulties often pushes a serious writer to the verge of abandoning a Korean project in sheer frustration.

By Martha Fulkerson
marthaf@ftimes.com
A statewide computer system linking certain public records in Indiana’s 92 counties could be available as early as next year.
The Trial Court Case Management System would make court and Bureau of Motor Vehicles
records accessible to governmental offices and the public. The Indiana Supreme Court Division of State Court Administration plans to foot the bill.

Price of public records offsets costs
Maryanne Franklin wasn't happy with her last visit to the DeSoto County Sheriff's
Office.
Franklin, a DeSoto County resident, visited the office last week to learn details about
her brother's arrest.
"I know they used to have all that information on the Internet," Franklin said earlier this week. "But the Sheriff's Office has killed their Web site and are charging people for information. It's just a way for them to make money."

DCF Files Sold At Auction
By KARLA JACKSON
TAMPA - Department of Children and Families employees scrambled Friday to
locate and destroy dozens of boxes of confidential files sold at a public auction
Thursday at the agency's former headquarters.
DCF officials blame a Tampa shredding company, Shred It, for not destroying the files,
which were left behind when DCF moved in February 2001. They also claim the
auctioneer, Tom Hicks of Premier Auctions in Brandon, was not authorized to sell the
files.
