Re: Wierd Message Again/Vacation

Hello colleagues,

I do some computer use coaching on the side, mainly for senior citizens who
have been given computers by family members and who find they need some one-
on-one help using the things.

The following recommendation may be of interest to you:
1. If your institution does not update it's anti-virus protection daily and
does not scan for viruses daily
2. If you do not update your home computer anti-virus software protection
regularly

What I recommend to my computer coaching clients, and which seems to work
well, is this:

1. If you use Internet Explorer or AOL as a browser, update your computer
anti-virus protection very often. That means, if you get online to the
Internet to surf the web and/or check your e-mail daily, then run an update
of your anti-virus subscription service no less than once a week. If you
get online only about once or twice a week, or less, then run the anti-
virus protection everytime, before you get online.

2. If you use Netscape as a browser, update your computer anti-virus
protection no less than every 2 weeks.

Note: Updating anti-virus protection means
* you need to have a current paid subscription to your anti-virus software
updating service
* you may have to update your anti-virus protection, then shut down your
computer, and then reboot for the new protection to be in force
* you have to have your anti-virus software enabled all the time

AOL and Outlook Express, the e-mail feature of Internet Explorer have some
weaknesses in their programming that make them a bit more vulnerable to
attacks by viruses, worms, Trojan horses, etc. Also, so many people use
either IE or AOL, that those who have a lot of time on their hands and
spend it devising ways to infect other computers with their computer
viruses, etc. tend to design them to hit IE and AOL more often than they do
hit Netscape users. There are some patches one can download from Microsoft
for better protection for Outlook Express.

Protectivley yours,
