ASSISTANT ARCHIVIST

The Sisters of Providence Archives is recruiting for a full-time staff archivist in our Seattle-based Archives (www.providence.org/archives).  The Archives capture the rich history of the Sisters of Providence religious community in the western United States, beginning in 1856, and of the health care, education and other ministries sponsored as Providence Health System and Providence Services. Reporting to the Archivist, the position performs collection, accession, appraisal, arrangement/description, and preservation for records, manuscripts, artifacts, and textiles in the collections in both Seattle and Spokane, WA; conducts research and other activities in support of reference services, publications and special projects; participates in website and database development and maintenance, and publication of a quarterly newsletter; and assists in preparing exhibits and outreach programs.

Requirements for consideration include a minimum of four years of archives experience involving professional archival duties and coordination responsibilities; computer database development and Microsoft Office applications software experience; and a Bachelor's degree in History, American Studies or a related discipline, with a Master's degree in archival studies course work preferred.  Certified archivist credentials required.  Occasional travel to the Spokane Archives site is required.  Organizational, interpersonal, speaking and writing skills; the ability to work independently and as part of a small team; and interest in learning about the history of the Northwest, the Catholic church, and religious communities will be important attributes for success in the position.
