Mississippi Digitization Workshop
Digitization and its Discontents: Providing Electronic Access to
Primary Source Materials in Mississippi
Presented by: The Society of Mississippi Archivists and the
Mississippi Library Association Special Collections Roundtable.
Date: July 26, 2002 (Friday)
Location: The University of Southern Mississippi Libraries, Hattiesburg,
MS
Cost: $15
Audience: Archives and Special Collections personnel.
Program:
The Society for Mississippi Archivists and MLA?s Special Collections
Roundtable is offering a ?digitization day? that is part workshop, part
presentation, part town-hall meeting. Many of us may be lost in the
letters of EAD, XML, DTD, and TEI with only a vague notion of how they
relate to a box and folder list, a letter, or an oral history. Others may
have a firm grip on how digitization works, but are curious about what is
right for their program. We are offering a one day intensive walk-through
of the basic digitization process, with ample time for questions and
discussion.
Participants will observe digitization in action, perform hands-on tasks
in the digitization lab and mark-up finding aids in small group
demonstrations. In morning and afternoon discussion periods, registrants
will have the opportunity to ask questions and talk with colleagues about
electronic access issues. A lunch will be provided.
The nature of the activities requires that we limit registration to
twenty, so sign up soon and reserve your spot.
