Archiving Websites

Good comments/questions on archiving websites. Key question always to be
asked of course is what is the expected timeframe of preservation? Adobe
Acrobat will indeed capture much of a website. Once captured in PDF,
converting it to images and outputing to a long term preservation media (LE
500) such as microfilm should be considered. This is relatively easy to do
these days and is low cost insurance to prevent equipment/software
obsolescence problems.

Check out http://www.bigheadinteractive.com/frames_AU_porto.html. There's
a
reference there to the A. A. Forbes Collection, Native-American photography
in the early 1900s. "Sac and Fox" could put your photos in the northern
Illinois, Wisconsin, Michigan area.

Hello to the list.

I was wondering what questions, decisions, and/or factors are involved in
archiving information on websites. I'm aware that this is a rather big
topic, and probably can't be answered very succinctly within the confines
of a listserv format, so if anyone could point me to relevant archival
literature - or maybe provide a few summarized suggestions - I would be
very thankful.

Marty,

We have discussed this topic a few times. I think that where I am leaning
is
to not rely on the technology to "capture" web pages for archival storage
at
this time. There a couple of tools that have been developed to do this,
they
are expensive and I am not sure how well proven they are. I usually argue
that we need to identify and schedule the documentation for the web site,
the policies, procedures, content, context and structure associated with
the
web sites as they develop and grow. View the web site as a business
process,
capture the information that most completely describes it but who wants to
keep an invoice forever.

One word only on the cost of such technology (I make no claims about
preservation quality, technology, or anything else.)

Anyone with a computer these days has Adobe's Acrobat READER - this is the
basic program that allows us all to read PDF format documents, and is free.
Most people aren't aware that Adobe sells Acrobat, which allows you to
CREATE (rather than just read), edit, and manipulate PDFs. One of its
features is "web capture", which allows you to type in a URL and copy
everything off the site, plus you can make the links active, so it more
resembles the original HTML.

Since the program is under $300, I'd make the case that web archiving is
possible without breaking the bank. Is it a long-term preservation option?
Weeeelllll, maybe. PDF is virtually universal, so one could make a case
for
it, but I agree with Chris that it's not something we should jump on right
away without taking a long, careful look.

Sorry, didn't add the list in last time.... :(

I asked, "What are your specific questions? What OS are you archiving
from?"

It all depends on what you mean by capture... If you are trying to archive
static content, just "tar" up the files from the webroot, on unix/linux, or
zip
up the files, on windows. The benefit of tar, (I don't know about zip), is
that
you can search the contents of the tar file. This is great if you are
looking
for specific information from a certain page. This is more difficult with
a
dynamic site, as the specific, probably most important data is actually
contained in a database. Therefore, you will need to take a snapshot of
the
database at the same time as you tar/zip the files up from the webroot. It
shouldn't be expensive, unless there is something outrageous that we need
from
these files...

That is why I like the idea of a text backup, such as tar. You can always
read
it. Anywhere, and it is free.

 For C & U Archivists :

A question for those of you who have not yet gone completely over to
electronic dissertations ( which I assume is still the majority ). One of
our catalogers tells me that students at our institution are having
problems securing paper stock for dissertations because the government is
now using a very similar stock for currency production. This was the
first I had heard of this. Has anyone else had this problem, and where do
you direct students for paper now?

Is the University of Denver worried about "counterfeit" dissertations?
:-) If not, why would they require using paper that's similar to
currency stock? I've never done an acid test on paper currency, but
if it's not acid-free, that would be a more important consideration
than anything else I can imagine.

We require that the paper be acid-free and white, but we've never
considered adding any further restrictions to the kind of paper that
can be used.

It came to my attention a few months ago that most ordinary
photocopier quality paper is now acid-free. I verified this with an
acid testing pen and our standard photocopier stuff *is* acid-free.
If this is the case generally, then specifying a particular brand of
paper wouldn't help the situation. The primary considerations should
be acid-free and minimum substance weight.

I'll bet that "similar to currency" stuff is quite expensive, and what
additional benefit does anyone get for it? I'd be interested in
hearing from anyone else on this subject also.

Subject: Historic wallpaper conservation question

Hello,

I was hoping for a little conservation advice so I can convince management
to preserve their town just a little bit better. In the historic buildings
of Garnet Ghost Town, precious little is off-limits to the public. The
management plan specifies that we be as user-friendly as possible, so the
majority of our artifacts are not roped off or otherwise protected. Many
people handle them on any given day.

With that explained, in one of the rooms of our historic three-story hotel,
there are three layers of wallpaper (dating back as early as the 1890's),
all falling off to different degrees. I would like to protect this from
falling off completely (as it is in some other rooms) and from patrons
taking bits as souveniers (which is not unheard of). Roping the room off is
out of the question, unfortunately. How would you conserve this wallpaper?
It begins halfway up the wall, about waist-high, and continues up to a high
ceiling (perhaps 10 feet?). Put plexiglass over it? Mylar? And how would
you attach it without harming the wallpaper?

All ideas would be warmly welcomed. Thank you in advance for your insight
and your time.

Valerie Schafer
