Nettie Lee Benson Latin American Collection
The General Libraries   The University of Texas at
Austin

The Archivist at the Nettie Lee Benson Latin
American Collection supervises, plans, and directs
the work of the archival processing staff and
processes archival collection materials.  Working
collaboratively with Digital Library Services
Division and Technical Services Division, the
Archivist will provide machine-readable
bibliographic records, create finding aids using
the Encoded Archival Description DTD, and work as
a team member to provide web access to archival
materials.  Additionally, the Archivist is
responsible for providing in-depth reference
service for archival collections, participating in
Rare Books and Manuscripts Reading
Room service to the public, providing
bibliographic instruction regarding rare books and
manuscript holdings and supervising the Rare Books
Room or the Benson Latin American Collection on
weekends on a rotating basis.  The position
reports to the Head Librarian, Benson Latin
American Collection.

The Nettie Lee Benson Latin American Collection, a
unit of the General Libraries at the University of
Texas at Austin, is a specialized research and
general services library focusing on materials
from and about Latin
America, and on materials relating to
Spanish-speaking peoples in the United States.
The Collection contains over 800,000 books,
periodicals, and pamphlets, 2,500 linear feet of
manuscripts, 19,000 maps,
21,000 microforms, 143,500 photographs and various
other materials.  Initially endowed with a superb
collection of rare books and manuscripts relating
to Mexico, the Benson Collection now maintains
important
holdings for all countries of Latin America with
special concentrations on the countries of the
R=EDo de la Plata, Brazil, Chile, Peru, and
Central America. The Rare Books and Manuscripts
Unit of the Benson Latin
American Collection is a closed stack area which
houses not only rare books and archival
collections but also software, audio-visual
materials, photographs, sheet maps, memorabilia,
and ephemera.  Access to holdings in the Unit is
through the online catalog or through in-house
files available in the Rare Books and Manuscripts

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:  MLS from an ALA
accredited graduate program.  Academic coursework
relating to Latin American and Mexican-American
history, culture and politics.  Three years
relevant
experience, preferably in an academic
environment.  Reading knowledge of Spanish.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:  Certification by the
Academy of Certified Archivists. MLS with a
specialty in archives or special collections.
Experience with Latin American colonial
handwritten documents and with standards for
archival and bibliographic description (APPM, LC
and AACR2).  Working knowledge of MARC cataloging
in OCLC, of EAD (Encoded Archival Description), of
HTML and XML and of the accepted
preservation/conservation techniques.  Knowledge
of reference sources, tools and techniques.
Reading knowledge of Portuguese.  Demonstrated
excellent organizational and supervisory skills.
Effective public speaking, teaching,
interpersonal, writing, and problem-solving
skills.  Ability to work collaboratively with
diverse populations; well-developed management,
team-building, and decision-making skills.
Initiative, creativity, flexibility, and the
ability to facilitate change and to meet
deadlines.  Experience working in a
technologically complex environment and knowledge
of scholarly communication patterns as well as
other issues facing libraries.  Demonstrated
potential for leadership.

SALARY AND BENEFITS:  Salary range is $38,000 -
$45,000 or more annually, depending upon
qualifications and experience.  No state or local
income tax.  Standard state benefits package
including annual vacation and sick leave, paid
holidays, retirement plan and health insurance
(comprehensive major medical plans or HMO plans,
dental plans, vision, life, disability).  Deferred
compensation and tax sheltered annuity programs
also available.
