Archival Mystery: The Lost Papers of Prof. Arthur Corbin

A GREAT LAW REVIEW ARTICLE ON ARCHIVES
by Michael Ravnitzky , mikerav@mindspring.com

I would like to heartily recommend a wonderful law review article entitled:
An Ivy Leage Mystery: The Lost Papers of Arthur Linton Corbin, by Professor
Scott D. Gerber, published in the Spring 2002 issue of the South Carolina Law
Review, 53 S.C. L. Rev. 605.

It tells the story of an archival mystery and how Prof. Gerber tried to trace
the solution: where are the papers of Arthur Linton Corbin, one of the
fathers (if not the father) of modern contract law. The article is less about
Corbin himself than about a somewhat frustrating search for missing archival
documents.

If you can get this article, (it is in the Lexis database, for example), it is
well worth reading, if nothing else, than for how archives are perceived by
academia. I recognize that some archivists may object to how the article
portrays some archives and archivists..
