The University of Minnesota Libraries invites applicants for the position of Head, University Archives. The University Libraries particularly encourages the candidacy of people with experience in multicultural and multiracial environments.
University Archives collects the historical and legal documentation of the University, and includes more than 60,000 bound volumes, 16,000 cubic feet of department and faculty papers, 48,000 audio tapes and films and thousands of photographs and negatives, documenting the history and heritage of the University. The Archives are located in the Elmer L. Andersen Library, along with most of the University's other special collections and archival units.
PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Responsible for overall administration of the University Archives collections;
liaison with departments and faculty in acquisition and transfer of material
to the archives; proactive role in identifying and securing relevant additions
to the collection; works closely with University Records and Information
Manager; supervision of staff of 2 FTE assistants and student staff; prepares
presentations for classes, groups and professional organizations to promote
the use of the Archives and its collections; facilitates and participates
in the organization, description and preservation processes of the collections;
grants administration and writing.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required: ALA accredited MLS or graduate degree in archival studies,
history or a related field; minimum of five years of increasingly responsible
experience as an archivist; demonstrated knowledge of accepted protocols
for arrangement, description, and preservation of archival materials; demonstrated
understanding of public records management principles, including management
of electronic records; unit management and supervisory experience; demonstrated
strong commitment to public service; strong oral and written communication
skills; strong interpersonal skills, and ability to work effectively with
a diverse clientele. Preferred: Additional advanced degree in a relevant
field; additional coursework in archives administration; experience with
records management; experience working with college or university records;
familiarity with public records laws.
SALARY AND BENEFITS: Full-time, 12-month, continuous appointment track, academic/professional position with probationary appointment at the Assistant Librarian rank. The Libraries offers a competitive salary, commensurate with skills and experience. Excellent benefits and moving allowance.
