Re: FW: Two Questions

They were also held at Camp Lee near Richmond, Virginia while my parents
were stationed there in 1944-1945. Mom and Dad said the POWs there were
always perfectly courteous as they did their tasks around the camp, and it
was apparent that many of them clearly preferred being in a stateside POW
camp to serving in the German military.

Dad scared the pants off one of them one day. He had recently had lower back
surgery, and was very tender around the incision. As he was standing in mess
line, one of the POWs who was doing janitorial work in the mess hall
accidentally jabbed him right in the incision with a mop handle. Dad spoke
German fluently, and he spun around and chewed the poor man out mercilessly
just as if he were still in the Wermacht. According to Dad, the POW turned
white as a sheet and, from then on, he and the other POWS gave Dad a VERY
wide berth.

Best wishes,
