Re: Two Questions (Beer)



Paul,

  It is my understanding that under the Geneva Convention governing the
treatment of POWs, rations were to be the same as those of troops at a
military base at home. The idea was that if I treat my prisoners as well
as I treat my soldiers, you will do the same. Beer was available on
military bases in the US, accordingly, POWs were granted the same
privilege.

  There were similar civilian objections to the provision of beer and
other rationed goodies to Japanese (non-citizen) internees in a Justice
Department work camp in Northern Idaho. Once the logic was explained the
grumbling subsided.
