Re: Help needed with jigsaw puzzles

Solving this one could be a good educational exercise for a conservation
training class! You could glue the pieces to acid-free museum board using
water soluble glue so the process is reversible (the conservators' test for
acceptability). Though I'm never anxious to glue anything, not being a
chemist myself, and being very skeptical of manufacturers' claims about
reversibility and "museum approved" products.

So you could frame them using the window mat method, using mat board the
same thickness as the puzzle board, and cutting the mat opening just large
enough for the assembled puzzle to sit inside the window. Then frame it
under glass. As long as the "sandwich" of glass, puzzle, and backing is
tight enough that the pieces can't slip out of place, you're OK. One
possible problem, though, is that a printed surface (the puzzle image)
should never rest directly on the glass under pressure, as, over time, the
medium (i.e., the ink) can migrate to the glass.

Good luck.

Subject: Help needed with jigsaw puzzles

Greetings!

I came across several jigsaw puzzles that were used as training aids for
tractor mechanics. They are printed on very light cardboard (as opposed to
the more robust material normal jigsaw puzzles are printed on) and wrapped
in very flimsy cellophane. Any ideas for how to best store them intact?

Best wishes,
