Most Popular Web Sites of Federal Agency Staffs
MOST POPULAR WEB SITES OF FEDERAL AGENCIES
by Michael Ravnitzky, mikerav@mindspring.com
Many federal agencies automatically collect aggregate statistics on the use
of the
internet by their staff. This is nothing sinister, it is a natural
outgrowth
of the type of web server statistics that are usually collected by
Information
Technology departments.
The Department of Justice assembles -- or used to assemble --, each week, a
two page list of the fifty (50) most frequently accessed websites by DOJ
employees. I recently obtained these weekly reports for FY2001. The
earliest
such reports were published on Sunday October 22, 2000 and as far as I know,
continue to the present.
Taking a weekly report at random (August 6, 2001 through August 12, 2002),
among the most popular sites in descending order are:
#3 New York Times
#8 CNN
#10 eBay
#13 Orbitz
#20 Westlaw
#21 Washington Post
#22 Weather.com
#24 Amazon.com
#32 Travelocity
#38 USA Jobs - OPM website
#41 Marketwatch
#43 USA Today
#46 Fox News
Also showing up on the weekly reports, depending upon the time of year are
other various sites, including the sports sites you might guess at:
nfl.com, frenchopen.com, sports illustrated,
You can ask for copies of the weekly reports of the most frequently accessed
web sites on DOJ computers - it is called Web Server Statistics for DOJ
Proxy
Servers -- by writing to:
Patricia D. Harris, FOIA/PA Unit
Justice Management Division
Room 114 LOC, 950 Pennsylvania Avenue, N.W.
Washington, DC 20530-0001
(301) 436-1007
You can also get comparable -- most popular web sites at an agency -- from
other federal agencies upon request to those agencies.
