Assistant Archivist

The Jacob Rader Marcus Center of the American Jewish Archives (AJA), is the largest cataloged collection of documentary evidence on the history of North American Jewry in the world. This internationally-known research center is located on the Cincinnati campus of the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion. The AJA preserves American Jewish history by documenting the life, activities and culture of the American Jewish community. In addition to its vast array of manuscript holdings that pertain to all aspects of Jewish life in America, the AJA serves as the institutional archives for many organizations and institutions of American Reform Judaism, including the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion. Having an active publication and program agenda, the AJA's archival holdings consist of approximately 10,000 feet of papers, a 20,000 image photograph collection, together with extensive audio and video recordings.

Responsibilities: At the Marcus Center, the Assistant Archivist works in active collaboration with an array of academics, professionals, and para-professionals under the overall supervision of the institution's Executive Director, Dr. Gary P. Zola, Associate Professor of the American Jewish Experience at Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion.

With regards to the holdings of the American Jewish Archives, the Assistant Archivist's responsibilities will include: preparing collections for research use by appraising and arranging collections; implementing necessary conservation procedures; developing finding aids and research tools (including use of MARC-AMC cataloging and EAD); and assisting on-site researchers with use of the collections. The Assistant Archivist is also responsible for answering telephone, mail, and electronic mail reference requests; assists in collection management and appraisal; performs administrative tasks in office; and is involved with outreach and various public programs together with other duties as required.

Qualifications: M.A. or M.L.S. preferred. Excellent written and oral skills; ability to work with a broad constituency, including colleagues, administration, donors, students, faculty, and the public. Preferred: Familiarity with electronic environments, including experience with MARC-AMC and EAD. ACA certification and knowledge of American Jewish history a plus.

Rank and Salary: This is a permanent, full-time position. Competitive salary, including a comprehensive health plan, sick leave, and 20 days vacation per year.
