A spud is also a steel (or, in the olden days, wooden) column used to hold
dredges and barges in place while working. The vessel is positioned at the
work site, and the spuds are lowered and planted firmly in the bottom of the
body of water. Spuds ar usually vertical, but in old times they could be set
at an angle to hold the vessel in place against the banks of a narrow
channel.
