Job Posting for Temporary Contract Archival Positions-San Francisco Bay Area



TEMPORARY CONTRACT ARCHIVAL PROCESSING POSITIONS AVAILABLE
(San Francisco Bay Area)

The National Archives and Records Administration's Pacific Region-San Francisco is seeking several temporary contract archivist-technicians for archival project work extending from the present (ASAP)  through September possibly October 2002.  Work can be full or part-time during flexible hours between 7AM and 5PM weekdays.  Pay is in the range of $15-$17 per hour.  Some training and detailed instruction is provided, but preferred applicants will have education and/or background and experience in Archival, Library Science, or Museum studies/work involving original archival documents /manuscript collections, and with related electronic applications, especially database finding aid formats.

Duties involve one or both of the following:  (1) performs archival processing and preservation work on archival textual records-especially the region's most actively used holdings relating to Pacific and Asian American immigration history, the Chinese Exclusion Acts, and related records. The work utilizes such techniques and procedures as destapling, removing other destructive fasteners from documents flattening, use of Mylar sleeves on torn or acid-migrating documents, re-foldering, re-boxing in acid-free containers, and copying fragile documents. Performs archival arrangement work, retention or restoration of provenance and original order, at item and file unit levels. Prepares internal archival control and public finding aids for archival records holdings, especially file-level multi-access point database indexes, folder and box lists. Prepares cross-references for any non-textual and oversized records that are filed separately. Assists in the preparation of location registers.

(2) Performs archival processing and preservation work on archival non-textual records such as engineering drawings, maps, and photographs.  Work may include such techniques and procedures as flattening, housing in oversize folders and map cabinets or tubes, or in non-acid paper or mylar envelopes. Performs archival arrangement work, retention or restoration of provenance and original order, at item, file unit and occasionally records series and originating office levels. Prepares internal archival control and public finding aids for archival non-textual records holdings, such as item-to-file-level database indexes, drawings registers, folder and box lists.  Prepares fragile, endangered archival photographic collections for shipment to and reformatting by archival photo reformat vendors. 

These jobs are geared especially for those with archival or related backgrounds and within easy commuting distance of NARA's Pacific Region-San Francisco (in San Bruno 12 miles south of San Francisco), who wish to add to their work experience involving major archival collections.
